Firearms Industry Honors Fallen Law Enforcement;
Donates $100,000 to
Fraternal Order of Police Foundation

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) -- the trade association for the firearms industry -- honored the nation's fallen law enforcement today by contributing $100,000 to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Foundation. The donation, which coincides with Police Week and the National Peace Officer's Memorial Service, was presented to FOP President Chuck Canterbury earlier this morning by NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane.

"Members of the firearms industry are proud to stand with America's brave men and women in blue who everyday put their lives on the line to help secure our freedom and keep us safe from harm," said Keane.

The close relationship between the firearms industry and law enforcement extends well beyond the purchasing of firearms, ammunition and related products. Members of the firearms industry, through NSSF, have long partnered with law enforcement on programs to curb the criminal acquisition and misuse of firearms and to encourage the safe handling and storage of firearms. These programs include Don't Lie for the Other Guy, the firearms industry's anti-straw purchasing campaign, and Project Childsafe®, a program which supplies police departments with firearm safety kits for distribution within their communities. To date, more than 35 million kits, which include a free firearm locking device, have been handed out around the country.

Firearms manufacturers have long recognized the importance of giving back to the law enforcement community -- a community that is an important and growing segment of the firearms industry market. For example, the law enforcement segment of the NSSF-owned and sponsored Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show represents 27 percent of the show's floor space at approximately 186,570 net square feet. If the segment were broken out as a stand-alone show, it would be the largest law enforcement show in the country.

"We look forward to continuing our close relationship with law enforcement at the federal, state and local levels," continued Keane. "And as a former prosecutor and son of a New York City policeman, I am especially thankful for the opportunity to be here this morning and have our industry contribute to this most worthy cause."
