California Association of Firearms
Retailers Hails Firearms Industry
Campaign to Stop Illegally Purchased
Firearms from Entering Golden State
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The California Association of Firearms Retailers (CAFR), representing federally licensed firearms retailers in the Golden State, hailed the launch of a major anti-straw purchasing campaign designed to raise awareness among San Diego residents and visitors of the dangers and severe penalties associated with illegally straw purchasing firearms.
The program, called Don't Lie for the Other Guy, was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the trade association for the firearms industry – and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to raise public awareness that it is a serious crime to purchase a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so or for someone who does not otherwise want his or her name associated with the purchase.
The program is also designed to educate firearms dealers on how to better detect and deter potential straw purchases. The campaign drives home the message that anyone attempting an illegal firearm purchase faces a stiff federal penalty: Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail.
“California's firearms retailers fully support the Don’t Lie program,” said CAFR President Marc Halcon. “As federally licensed firearms retailers, and members of our respective communities, we want to do everything we can to ensure criminals never acquire our products.”
Don't Lie for the Other Guy is a joint program of ATF and the NSSF. Funding for the program comes from a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
