Safety and Education

Firearms-related accidents have declined sharply even as gun ownership in America is rising. More than half of all households now own firearms, yet accidental fatalities are at an all-time low--down 60 percent over the last 20 years. For decades, the firearms industry has emphasized education to ensure the safe and responsible use of its products. This effort and those by other organizations are why the shooting sports and hunting are rated among the safest forms of recreation. Some 40 million people of all ages safely participate in these activities. As the trade association for the firearms, hunting and recreational shooting industry, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is the leader to developing firearms safety programs.

The largest and most comprehensive firearms safety education program in the nation provides free safety kits that include a cable-style firearm locking device and key safety messages about safe handling and storage of firearms. Developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and funded by U.S. Department of Justice grants and the firearms industry.

To combat the problem of criminal and illegal misuse of firearms, this public awareness national program educates federally licensed firearms retailers and the general public on how to detect and deter potential criminal "straw man" purchases. Developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and funded by U.S. Department of Justice grants and the firearms industry.

What if a child were to encounter a firearm in an unsupervised situation? NSSF addresses this safety concern through educational video programs appropriate for school safety curriculums. A general-audience program is also available that provides a review of safety rules for firearms owners.

NSSF's conservation videos provide elementary through high school-aged students with accurate information on the success of sportsmen-supported conservation and wildlife management programs. These documentary videos are helpful resources for environmental science, biology, or current events schools curriculums.

Safety-conscious firearms owners foster positive public perception of firearms, shooting and hunting. To help ensure that shooters and hunters are well-prepared ambassadors of their sports, a variety of safety and conservation materials are available for safety and hunter education programs and events. Developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
