Fraternal Order of Police Back Grant Award To NSSF's Project ChildSafe Program

The 330,000-member strong Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) this week announced its support of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs two-year $2.4 million cooperative grant to NSSF that will enable Project ChildSafe to expand its firearms safety efforts. In a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FOP National President Chuck Canterbury said, "Law Enforcement agencies across the country consider Project ChildSafe gun locks and safety materials to be a valuable component to their community safety and outreach programs."

Governors Proclaim National Hunting and Fishing Day

On Saturday, millions of sportsmen and women across the country will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD). Established in 1972, NHFD recognizes the time-honored American traditions of hunting and angling and the countless contributions made by the original conservationists - hunters and anglers - through the American System of Conservation Funding. NSSF helped establish National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1972 and continues to be a sponsor.

To recognize the important role that sportsmen and women play in the conservation of fish and wildlife resources, and as economic drivers in their states, 25 governors nationwide, predominantly Governors Sportsmen's Caucus (GSC) members, have signed proclamations showcasing their support for their state's hunting and angling community. Additionally, the Ohio Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus passed a resolution recognizing the day. To find NHFD events held in your state, click here.

 

Californians: Continue to Contact Gov. Brown in Opposition to AB 96 and SB 347

California Gov. Jerry Brown still has time to act on two extremely misguided and anti-gun bills the Legislature sent to him, AB 96 and SB 347. Brown has until Oct. 11 but could act at any time on these bills. AB 96 would end the current exemption in state law allowing possession with intent to sell, or sale, of ivory from any elephant or other specified ivory-bearing species legally obtained prior to June 1, 1977. AB 96 would ban the sale of such items, except for antiques at least 100 years old including firearms, knives and jewelry.

SB 347 would add to the list of misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit someone from possessing a firearm for 10 years, such as the inadvertent carrying of ammunition onto school property that could occur when picking up a child from school after target shooting or hunting. In addition, an FFL who unknowingly takes in on trade a used firearm later determined to be stolen could lose their retail license. NSSF stands adamantly opposed to these bills and urges California residents to contact Gov. Brown today and respectfully urge him to veto these ill-advised bills.

Supreme Court Weighs Hearing Highland Park MSR Ban Challenge

The U.S. Supreme Court's October 2015 term has not yet begun and already one Second Amendment case has been sent to the justices who will decide whether it should be considered on the merits. The case, Friedman v. Highland Park, follows a Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decision that upheld the Chicago suburb's ban on modern sporting rifles with certain features, such as a barrel shroud or pistol grip.

NSSF filed friend of the court briefs in both the Seventh Circuit and with the U.S. Supreme Court, which petitioners have relied on in their appellate filings in both courts.  Although the Court has not been quick to act on Second Amendment cases, we could know as soon as Oct. 13 whether the case will be heard on the merits.

 

NSSF's Microstamping Case Appeal Now on Docket

A California Superior Court ruling this summer dismissed the industry's challenge to the state's microstamping requirement, citing the doctrine of sovereign immunity. NSSF'S challenge to that ruling is now on the state appellate court's docket. NSSF is challenging the provision of the Unsafe Handgun Act that requires dual placement microstamping capability in each new model of semi-automatic handgun before it may be added to the state's approved roster. A briefing schedule for this case has not yet been provided, but briefing should begin later this year.

 

Colorado Gun Laws Oral Argument Monday

Next Monday morning, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral argument in the case of Colorado Outfitters v. Hickenlooper. NSSF joined with other pro-industry and pro-Second Amendment groups to challenge Colorado's expanded background checks on private firearms transfers and restrictions on ownership of standard capacity magazines as an unconstitutional infringement of the Second Amendment. Colorado has argued that the imposed burdens are necessary to promote public safety. We would expect to hear more of these same arguments in court next week.

 

Cabela's Reinforces 'Don't Lie for the Other Guy' Commitment

Leading specialty retailer Cabela's has taken its commitment to the firearms industry's "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" program to help prevent illegal "straw" purchases a step further. Now, customers beginning the process of purchasing a firearm in all 60 Cabela's stores will be shown a new counter card that explains in a clear and concise way just what a straw purchase is and answers questions about the subject. The card was developed by NSSF working with Cabela's. Cabela's was recognized as NSSF's 2015 "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" Retailer of the Year for its work in creating a customized program to help all its stores' employees recognize and prevent straw purchases.
