NSSF Praises U.S. Senate Passage
of Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act

The National Shooting Sports Foundation praised the passage this week by the U.S. Senate of the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act. The act, our industry's top legislative priority, was passed as an amendment to S.2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act. Similar legislation passed the House of Representatives earlier in the 114th Congress. As a result, the Bipartisan Sportsmen's package is closer to enactment than ever before.

"The National Shooting Sports Foundation would like to thank the bill's sponsors, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and the leadership of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus for their tireless and unwavering commitment to working on a bipartisan basis to secure passage of this legislation on behalf of current and future generations of America's hunters and sportsmen," said Larry Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel. Keane also gave Senate leaders special credit for securing the unanimous consent agreement that allowed the Senate to complete its work on the bill and noted that we look forward to continuing to work in a bipartisan fashion with the Senate and Members of the House to secure enactment of this vital legislation in this Congress.

Calif. Bill Seriously Impacting Retailers Fails to Advance

The California Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection this week failed to gain enough votes to approve and pass AB 2459 out of committee. AB 2459 would have required firearms retailers to videotape all firearms sales and transfers, and keep the video surveillance footage for three years. NSSF research showed such requirements would cost retailers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

While the original bill was amended to remove an insurance requirement, many of the mandates set forth in AB 2459 were unprecedented and cost-prohibitive. This legislation would have done nothing to increase public safety, while causing many firearms businesses to close their doors, likely the intention of this poorly crafted legislation. NSSF opposed this measure and will continue to do so. This is a small victory for California's firearms retailers and NSSF thanks all of those who voiced their opposition to AB 2459.

Calif. Senate Committee Approves 'Assault Weapons' Ban Expansion

The California Senate Committee on Public Safety gave its approval to SB 880, legislation to expand even further California's already misguided "assault weapons" ban. The legislation set forth by Sen. President Pro Tem Kevin De Leon would expand the definition by including any semi-automatic firearm capable of accepting a detachable magazine and featuring one or more of the specified attributes. NSSF will continue to work to defeat SB 880.

Urge Georgia Governor to Sign Firearms Industry Protection Legislation

Georgia House Bill 1060 still awaits action from Gov. Nathan Deal. The National Shooting Sports Foundation worked hard to get the Georgia Firearms Industry Nondiscrimination Act (FIND Act) passed through the Georgia General Assembly, attaching it to an omnibus pro-gun bill, HB 1060, late in the session. The Georgia FIND Act language included in HB 1060 would protect those involved in the lawful commerce of firearms or ammunition products against discrimination by those in the financial services industry. Please contact Gov. Deal today and respectfully urge him to sign HB 1060 into law.

Praise for NSSF for Matching ATF Theft Reward Offers

Bearing Arms writer Jenn Jacques has taken note that when thefts occur at federally licensed firearms retailers, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is there to assist the federal and regional law enforcement investigation by matching the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reward offers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. Writing that this long-standing NSSF practice could "...send liberal gun grabbers into shock", Jacques offered this: "I hope people see how much character the NSSF is showing here. By ponying up cash to help the ATF catch gun thieves and recover stolen weapons, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is proving once again they put their priorities over profit." Thank you, Jenn, from all of us at NSSF.
