Memo to Mrs. Clinton: More Americans Support Second Amendment; Believe Gun ownership Protects, Not Endangers
As Hillary Clinton continues to prove that she would work to render Second Amendment rights impossible to exercise, a new poll by the Pew Research Center, “Opinions on Gun Policy and the 2016 Campaign,” shows Americans’ increased support for gun ownership.
In fact, 52 percent, of Americans surveyed by Pew said they believe protecting the Second Amendment is more important than controlling gun ownership. In addition, 58 percent of those surveyed say that gun ownership does more to protect people from becoming victims of crime while only 37 percent believe it does more to put people at risk.
One might think that these numbers would give anti-gun Democrat office seekers pause – and indeed, Mrs. Clinton has attempted to tone down her public rhetoric for now. Yet, we still hear calls to bring back the failed national “Assault Weapons Ban” from candidates clearly working on motivating their base, and not even attempting a broader appeal. Yet despite the steady drumbeat of misleading and inaccurate mainstream media coverage, support for such a ban has slipped from 57 percent to 52 percent in the past year.
Mrs. Clinton’s supporters’ political miseducation sometimes results in an expressed loathing for the Second Amendment because it was “written a long time ago.” That is indeed troubling and is equally an indictment of what passes for many citizens’ understanding of American history.
The Pew poll provides confirmation that anti-gun Democrats are ignoring American overall sentiment on guns, even if they believe their narrative plays well in their precincts. It is clear that Mrs. Clinton’s oft-stated, if now somewhat muted, goal of making it harder for law abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights is not going away. That’s why it is vital that we all work to make sure our friends, family, and fellow gun owners go to the polls on Election Day and #GUNVOTE.
