NSSF Q&A: U.S. Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas)

Editor’s Note: We are pleased to post the latest of our occasional Q&A features with an elected official who supports hunting and the shooting sports. NSSF thanks Congressman Gene Green (D-Texas, 29th) for agreeing to talk with us.

Who introduced you to hunting/the shooting sports and at what age?

When I began dating Helen, my wife, my father-in-law and I hunted squirrels in East Texas using a single shot 22 over a 20-gauge shot.

What was your most recent shooting sports/hunting activity? With whom?

My most recent shooting and hunting activity took place last year on our lease in South Texas. My son, Chris, and I went deer and hog hunting.

Describe your favorite shooting sport/hunting activity? Which hunt? Which gun? Where? What species?

I enjoy hunting on our lease for hogs and white-tail deer with my son and my grandsons. I use a 270 and 7 mm mag. I also hunt white wing in South Texas with a 12-gauge over and under.

Which piece of pending legislation related to the firearms industry is particularly important to you and why?

The SHARE Act – While it has a lot of good gun provisions in the bill, now we need to work toward including more conservation provisions.

What do you see as the challenges and opportunities for hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts in this congressional session?

We still have to get 60 votes on the Senate side to advance major legislation. The key will be striking a reasonably balanced approach with Democratic members who understand the issue to craft reasonable legislation that we can get to the President’s desk.
